Learn to Play > Lesson 1: Introduction to the Mrdanga

Different kinds of drums and how to put them down.

Now days there are different varieties of mrdangas.
  • Clay drums with leather straps and leather head.
  • Metal drums with leather straps and leather head.
  • Fiberglass drums with leather straps and leather heads.
  • Balaram Mrdangas - Fiberglass body and plastic heads

Don't put a drum with a leather head down on its end. Always put a drum with a leather head down on its side, however, it's okay to put an all-plastic Balaram Mrdanga down on its end.
